What are the hours like in residency?
Residents work 40–80 hours a week depending on specialty and rotation within the specialty, with residents occasionally logging 136 (out of 168) hours in a week. Some studies show that about 40% of this work is not direct patient care, but ancillary care, such as paperwork.
Do you have free time in residency?
According to ACGME work hour rules, interns never work longer than 16 hours at a time, and must have a minimum of eight hours out of the hospital between scheduled shifts, and an average of one day off per week. For medical residents, quite the opposite is true. There are no school breaks during residency.
How many hours per week do medical students study?
Despite our relatively few in-class hours, medical school does take up a frighteningly large proportion of your time. That being said, between studying (about 30-40 hours per week), class, and clinical work, there are little pockets of completely free time to be discovered and treasured.
