Many times, people are ready to start seriously dating anywhere from six months to a year after a major breakup, but it still largely depends on the length of time they spent in the relationship, Alexis Nicole White, an author and relationship expert, tells Bustle.

Most people need a month or two to process the breakup, to mourn, and to integrate lessons before jumping back in if they were in a fairly serious relationship, she says. If you dated someone for a year or more, you may need three to four months.
According to relationship and dating experts, its important to be upfront. Do not date others to simply “move on” from your ex. In the immediate aftermath of a breakup, people often date as a form of romantic validation, especially if you were the one rejected.
Men (again, in general), on the other hand, will typically bury their feelings and “move on” by making a deliberate effort to start dating again immediately. This means they procrastinate processing what happened, and as a result, their feelings come back to haunt them again and again in later relationships.
