There isnt a boss in Dragon Aerie so you need to use the small soapstone. If you are trying to summon your friend also add the Name Engraved Ring. You can run through the area and not kill the dragons and make your way to the shrine, then lay his soapstone down and then run back down the bridge to Aerie.
